Blood Pressure

Concept Explanation

Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure:

As blood flows, it exerts a force on the walls of the blood vessels. This is much greater in the arteries than in the veins. Blood pressure resists the collapsing of blood vessel and also ensures the blood supply to all the parts of the body.

  • The pressure of flow of blood in the aorta and its main branches is defined as blood pressure. The heart has to develop a high pressure so that blood can be pumped through the arteries, capillaries and veins.
  • The pressure created during ventricular systole is called as systolic pressure  which is equal to 120mm column of mercury.
  • The pressure created during ventricular diastole is known as diastolic pressure  which is about 80mm of mercury.
